Liana Holmberg

The Business of Publishing

Liana Holmberg is the love child of traditional publishing and tech start up culture. She began her career at the award-winning Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing as Assistant Managing Editor. She served next as Production Editor at the University of Hawai`i Press and then Art Director at the premier open-access journal Public Library of Science. She is a graduate of the Stanford Professional Publishing Course and a freelance editor. Evolving with the times, Liana joined Linden Lab, makers of the 3-D virtual world Second Life, where she became Product Manager of Search and Advertising and gained insight into how user-generated content and social media impact publishing. Liana holds a Master’s in Creative Writing from the University of Hawai`i. She writes poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Her award-winning work has appeared in the Academy of American Poets anthology New Voices, the alternative newspaper Honolulu Weekly, and a variety of literary journals online and in print.

Led the search and advertising products, introducing a new advertising revenue line in less than 3 months, and earning an "on-the-job MBA." Also served as Open Source Strategy team lead, Program Manager and Community Governance Guru.

Co-founder, Lokul Media, Inc. 
Developed concept and strategy for start-up aimed at providing travel-related content on mobile devices and designed brand extension magazine. (Start-up did not launch.)

Art Director, Public Library of Science
Curated covers and directed design of marketing and development materials for the premier open-access publisher of scientific and medical research. Also served as Production Editor and Copyeditor.

Production Editor, University of Hawai‘i Press
Managed 7 academic journals. Streamlined production, cut costs, and supervised freelancers and subscription fulfillment services in Asia and the U.S.

Assistant Managing Editor, Manoa: a Pacific Journal of International Literature
Edited writing by established and emerging authors, including Chang-Rae Lee, Catherine Ryan Hyde, Donald Ritchie, and Nguyen Qui Duc.

Reporter and Editorial Assistant, Honolulu Weekly
Wrote cover stories, features, and reviews. Edited summer book issue. Interviewed writers Kathleen Norris and Sia Figiel.

Media Center Manager, Hawai‘i Pacific University
Managed operations of Learning Assistance Center computer lab, including 4 full-time and 20 part-time employees. Taught faculty workshops on integrating digital media and resources into curricula.

Technology Program Coordinator and Teacher, Ho‘ala School
Taught computer skills and media production to kindergarten through high school. Specialized in working with grade-level teachers to develop technology units that facilitated teaching of core topics.

Writing awards: Academy of American Poets prize; Merle Clark Award with Distinction for fiction; John Young Scholarship for Students in the Arts. Received Abernethy Fellowship for students pursuing careers in publishing.
